What is Biophysical Profile?

Biophysical Profile (BPP): Assessing Fetal Well-being Introduction: Monitoring the health of a baby during pregnancy is an essential part of antenatal care. The biophysical profile (BPP) is a reliable test that helps assess how well the fetus is doing inside the womb, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. It provides useful information about the baby’s movement, breathing, muscle tone, and overall oxygen supply. What Is a Biophysical Profile? A biophysical profile is a prenatal test that combines ultrasound scanning and a non-stress test (NST) to evaluate the baby’s condition. It measures specific physical and physiological signs that show how well the baby is coping in the uterus. Purpose of the Test The BPP helps determine whether the fetus is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients from the placenta. It is often recommended for pregnant women with high blood pressure, diabetes, reduced fetal movement, prolonged pregnancy, or suspected intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Com...

Vulva Care during pregnancy

Mide’s Gentle Hygiene Story Pregnancy brings joy, excitement — and plenty of body changes. Among these changes, many women notice increased sensitivity in their intimate areas. Unfortunately, some well-meaning hygiene habits can actually cause discomfort instead of preventing it.   Let’s take a closer look through Mide’s story, a simple reminder that 'gentle care is the best care' for your vulva during pregnancy.   Mide, a first-time expectant mother, prided herself on cleanliness. She used scented soaps, wipes, and sprays every day to feel “extra fresh.”   But a few weeks into her pregnancy, she began to feel itching and irritation around her vulva. Worried, she switched products, but nothing worked. Eventually, she went to her antenatal clinic, where Nurse Yemi offered kind advice that changed everything.    What Nurse Yemi Explained .... “Your vulva doesn’t need all those perfumes and scrubs,” Nurse Yemi said gently. “Pregnancy hormones ma...

The Midwives

Image
It was World Midwives day on May 5th. The midwives are important noble health workers and I am particularly passionate about their work of bringing to life and securing that life in place. So many things could go wrong without a midwife, I have some as friends and coworkers. They are not necessarily women but any man or woman trained to deliver pregnant women and also ensure the safety of mother and child is a midwife. They were the savior of the olden Hebrew women. The Hebrew women were known to the Egyptians to have given birth by themselves without the help of a doctor or midwives, however, the real story says that the midwives deceived Pharaoh. They were actually present to conduct those deliveries. In our world today, many are self professed Hebrew women and most pregnant women would like to be one during labor meaning they hope to deliver all by themselves which can be very disastrous. However, a Hebrew woman is a woman who delivers safely without complications and wi...

The Asmatics and Triggers.

Image
WORLD ASTHMA DAY: The Asmatics and Triggers.  I will start with the story of a boy that developed Asthma following recurrent use of insecticide in his household. It followed each day after the use of these indoor chemicals, the boy would start with mild catarrh then cough and finally breathing issues which usually resolves with the use of Salbutamol nebules. After about 4 episodes each following the use of insecticides and frequent visits to a doctor who diagnosed possible asthma, then the mother noticed. She avoided the identified cause and the symptoms ceased for a very long while.  Asthma is a respiratory condition in which the air pipes are constantly ready to react and over react to any perceived or real allergen. Allergens are things that are capable of stimulating responsiveness of the airway protective mechanism. These allergens are usually foreign bodies, among others like emotional and physical stress, medications as the case may be; can make the airway g...

Image
INDOOR CLEANING: Better Approach.  …… Let's start with a story…... Mrs. Alabi got home from a three-day business trip on a Friday evening, and she suddenly realized that the next day won't be for resting as she had thought. The sitting room was like it had just hosted a party involving people with different personalities. She could see open books and magazines on the chairs, clothes, plates, cups and shoes scattered about and at this time, she could only imagine what the kitchen would be like. She’s a mum of two kids of preschool age and a wife to a ‘work from home’ Man who cares little about home arrangement and cleanliness just like some men do.  How will Mrs Alabi enjoy her weekend despite all she met at home? Introduction: Yes! it's an opportunity to write again after a very long break. Right about now, you will be reading about something almost all of us do daily, well, except for the big bosses and the older generation. We all clean, sweep and make efforts to tid...

Do you know about Down Syndrome?

Image
Let's talk about down syndrome. Introduction   Every living thing has genetic composition that must be complete in numbers and in structure for proper functioning and compatibility with life. Humans may be born with genetic abnormalities, some which may not allow the child to continue living or cause serious defects immediately after birth or later in life. Many of these genetic abnormalities are major reasons for spontaneous miscarriage in early pregnancy. An example of these genetic abnormalities include: Down syndrome.  What is down syndrome?  Every human being is born with 23 pairs of chromosomes (genetic materials) amounting to 46 in numbers. It becomes an abnormality if any of these chromosomes are either in excess or in shortage of numbers and structure. The case of down syndrome is that of an abnormal number of chromosome number 21, hence it is also called Trisomy 21. This singular problem is the cause of their looks, behavior and characteristics. Although people ...

The modern day Hebrew woman.

Image
The Hebrew women were known to the Egyptians to have given birth by themselves without the help of a doctor or midwives, however, the real story says that the midwives deceived Pharaoh. They were actually present to conduct those deliveries. In our world today, many are self professed Hebrew women and most pregnant women would like to be one during labor. hence, a Hebrew woman is a woman who delivered safely without complications or with little intervention. In this day and age, A Hebrew woman will be a strong woman who has ample correct information on pregnancy, labor and delivery because she reads and asks questions. She understands that she could make use of technological advancements in cases of difficult deliveries. She knows that indeed skilled midwives were present in those days too and so she will submit herself to only a skilled birth attendant when labor comes.  She  signs up for antenatal care immediately and as soon as she has been confirmed pregnant by blood test ...

PREVENTION OF HYPERTENSION

Prevention of Hypertension.   It is first important to note that it is almost impossible to prevent what you do not know about. To prevent a monster from entering your house for example, you have to know its strategies and which route it enters people's houses,  either by the window, roof, wall or by the door. In a lighter mood, I am trying to say that you need a handful of knowledge of whatever you want to do away with. So let's start with the definition; What is hypertension? It is the force in the blood vessels the heart needs to overcome to pump blood through the body. It can be likened to increased pressure in pipes of water making the pump work harder and harder to get water to the site it is needed. The pipes are blood vessels while the pump is the heart. It's that simple. Hypertension is quite common these days, among both young and old alike. I can boldly guess that 4 out of every 10 people on the street are hypertensive, well that's just a hypothesis. Hypert...

Rats, Cockroaches out of Thy Kitchen.

Image
Keeping pests out of your kitchen.  I was visiting a friend recently for the weekend and just towards the evening of one of the days, well, at about 8pm, I entered the fairly dark kitchen to find out that I have to compete with a few granny cockroaches and hundreds of little ones to the extent that one mighty one almost fell into the pot of beans I wanted to open. It wasn't a funny sight, I came out of the kitchen wondering what could be wrong, It's a big house belonging to a middle class couple. I started to assess the kitchen hygiene critically and it wasn't long I discovered what might have caused the scene I just watched.  A kitchen is a dedicated place for food and food items. We may not be able to do without cooking, or eating in a day, all table activities are connected to the kitchen, it's like a food refinery. These food goes directly into us and their content is absorbed into our system including the ones that came from the pests.  A pest is any creature ...
