Today, I want to continue on my discussion about cervical cancer so we will discuss Pap Smear. I'm sure you must have heard about it. Our discussion won't be complete without mentioning it.
What is Pap Smear?
Pap smear test is also known as PAPANICOLAOU test, named after Georgios Papanikolaou, a man who discovered it far back in the 1940s. It is a screening test for cervical cancer, a very crucial and a highly sensitive test. it can detect cervical cancer in its earliest form and this is a good news because cervical cancer has a very good survival rate if detected early.
How is Pap Smear done?
When you are ready to do one, you will meet your doctor who will write a request for you to a reliable diagnostic center, or more appropriately, your doctor will collect the sample by him or herself. you will be asked to lie down on a couch, facing up with your two legs folded at the knees. Of course you will remove your undies, because the sample for the smear will be collected from the center of your cervix (neck of the womb) as in the picture above. After collecting the sample, it will be taken to the laboratory in an appropriate preservative for proper staining. the result of the test will be acted upon further by your doctor. Below is what it may look like to be reported by a pathologist.
who should do a Pap Smear? and how often?
Advisable, women from the ages between 21-25yrs to 65yrs, all sexually active women. it usually should be done every 3 yrs.
