Thin people can develop Diabetes Mellitus.
I recently taught some group of people on the topic (Myths of diabetes) and it was an interesting time. Everything in life has Myths that human minds have conceived. Myths can be gotten from diluted or modified facts. Diseases like diabetes have their own Myths. Let's mention a few with their facts.
People with diabetes cannot eat sugar or carbohydrates.
fact: A diabetic can eat anything but in moderation. A fist-sized carbohydrate is better recommended while filling the rest of the plate with veggies and protein. Generally for a healthy lifestyle, carbohydrate should be about a quarter of the plate. Moderate intake of food with medication and regular exercise are better combined. Do not take medication without eating.
Type 2 diabetes affects only fat people.
Fact: The word 'only' makes it false. There's no absolute in medical science, moreover there are thin people living with diabetes. It is worthy of note however that being fat is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
People with diabetes should only eat diabetes food.
Fact: yes they should eat the recommended diabetic food but if on medication and compliant, they can eat normal food but in moderation and on a healthy plate (quarter of the plate made of carbs).
People with diabetes go blind and lose their legs.
Fact: With compliance to medication and dietary regimen, there will be no reason to come down with complications of diabetes.
Diabetes is contagious
Fact: This is a No. It can be transferred genetically but not contagious. Children of a diabetic mother can develop diabetes in the future.
Fruits can be dangerous.
Fact: There's actually no fruit that a diabetic should not take. Everything in moderation is the goal.
It will be as short as this today.
