Simple Tips on Skin Care
The skin is the largest organ of the body, covering the whole body surfaces from the scalp to the feet. It is the 1st thing to notice on sighting someone. In a very subtle way, the skin has a way of telling someone's age, nutritional status, hemodynamic status(whether someone has enough red blood cells), and presence of an ongoing disease or illness.
The skin has so many functions ranging from physiological functions like protection from the sun and outside world, salt and water balance, production of vitamin D to cosmetic functions like beauty and racial differentiation. Absence of skin, skin diseases or skin failure due to one disease or the other can be disastrous and may lead to death. Hence the skin should be taken care of and its integrity maintained. Here are ways you can care for your skin.
Eat a balanced diet: Not many people understand that the skin could be a reflection of nutritional status. Avoid junks, go for more nutritious food.
Fruits and vegetables are antioxidants, mopping up dangerous chemicals in the body. Be deliberate about eating fruits and vegetables and make it a habit.
Take enough water. The goal is to ensure adequate hydration. Average human being should take at least 2-3 liters of water per day. This will keep the skin moist and prevent dryness.
Understand your skin type and find a way to improve on it. Someone with dry skin should not think of not applying cream after bathing but should even do that more than once per day. A dry skin should be kept moist.
Avoid or limit as much as possible the use of antiseptics or medicated soap or adding its solution to bathing water. They work so well by killing microbes on the skin but here is the catch, they do not have sensitivity for only bad microbes hence killing both the good (normal flora are protective of the skin) and the bad organisms on the skin, hence exposing the skin to danger. It is better to just wait till it is recommended and necessary.
Avoid what your skin dislikes. If you find out you react to something unnecessarily, then it's time to avoid it.
Avoid insect bites as much as possible, wear long socks in picnics or when outside the house at night.
Do not share personal wear and materials like towels or a handkerchief.
Avoid the sun as much as possible, use sunscreen to reduce the effect of the sun on your skin.
Go for moisturizing creams and avoid cream mixture that changes the skin tone or color at any level.
Get and use hypoallergenic soaps and soaps that forms a film on the skin after bathing given a sensation of soapy skin.
Do not take medications that are not prescribed by a medical doctor, some drugs can readily destroy the skin.
Understand the skin disease in your family and how to prevent it
Lastly, if you notice any abnormality on your skin call the attention of a doctor or better still a dermatologist.
In conclusion, simple things like the above are needed to keep the skin healthy. Note that the first 3 most important points are what you take in, focus on those and others and see the results on the healthy skin.
